Loss of consciousness or unconsciousness is the most devastating consequence of brain damage. With improvement in intensive and critical care we are able to save many lives in the initial stages but some patients still remain in a vegetative state. If physician-supervised, comprehensive and multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation interventions are started early, they can significantly alter the course of the patient and lead to improved neurological and functional outcomes.
Patient management consists of a coma stimulation programme, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, robotic training on Lokomat® to initiate standing, stepping and walking, cognitive stimulation and retraining, speech and language therapy, and other forms of therapy and stimuli.
