Description
  • To Plan radiation treatments for cancer patients; perform dose calculations. 
  • To ensure accurate measurement of radiation output from sources employed in cancer therapy. To perform patient dosimetry as required.
  • To investigate equipment performance, organize quality control practices, design radiation installations, and implement controls for medical radiation hazards. 
  • Responsible for radiation safety; design shields for treatment rooms; ensure teletherapy machines (scanners/computers) are operating safely; perform machine acceptance testing. 
  • To consult with Physicists, Medical Doctors, and CT Technicians; to provide instruction to professional staff in treatment planning; to assist in the development of new treatment techniques. 
  • To maintain required records, reports and files; collect necessary statistics and keep the concerned department’s HOD’s and quality departments updated regarding the same.
  • To supervise Physicist and technician's activities and prepare duty rota.
  • Report to the HOD regarding all safety aspects, all important equipments related aspects and mishaps immediately.
  • To participate in academic activities of the department & organization. 
  • To be part of the Quality Initiative Improvement & protocols of the department & organization.
  • To report to all concerned HOD’s any event, incidence or non compliance issues.
  • The designated quality team and radiation safety committee have to be timely and duly informed of all the events, non-complainces
Radiation Safety Officer:
1. Carry out routine measurements and analysis on radiation and  radioactivity levels in the controlled area, supervised area of the radiation installation and maintain records of the results thereof;
2. Investigate any situation  that could lead to potential exposures;
3. Advise the employer regarding:
The necessary steps aimed at ensuring that the regulatory constraints and the terms and conditions of the license are adhered to;
The safe storage and movement of radioactive material within the radiation installation;
Initiation of suitable remedial measures in respect of any situation that could lead to potential exposures;
Routine measurements and analysis on radiation and radioactivity level in the off- site environment of the radiation installation and maintenance of the results thereof;
4. Ensure that:
It reports on all hazardous situations along with details of any immediate remedial actions taken are made available to the employer and licensee for reporting to the competent authority and copy endorsed to the competent authority
Quality assurance tests of structures, systems, components and sources, as applicable are conducted
Monitoring instruments are calibrated periodically.
5. Assist the employer  in:
Instructing the workers on hazards of radiation and suitable safety measures and work practices aimed at optimizing exposures to radiation sources; and 
The safe disposal of radioactive wastes; and
Developing suitable emergency response plans to deal with accidents and maintaining emergency preparedness;
6. Advise the licensee on :
          The modifications in working condition of a pregnant worker; and
          The safety and security of radioactive sources
7. Furnish to the licensee and the competent authority the periodic reports on safety status of the radiation installation; and
8. Inform the competent authority when he leaves the employment.
9. Ensure all institutional data confidentiality and authenticity.
10. It is the RSO’s responsibility to ensure all compliances related aspects including compliances on ELORA.
