Endoscopic ultrasound is an advanced technique to examine your intestinal linings upper ( Esophagus , Stomach and Duodenum) , lower ( Colon and Rectum) and their surrounding organs like Lungs, pancreas, adrenal glands, liver, gall bladder, bile ducts.
This device is similar to flexible endoscopes along with small chip of Ultrasound at the tip of scope to visualize structure within and outside lumen.
This examination tells us precise information about Intestinal layers and structure lying outside but near the intestinal wall. This gives, much magnified images of any lesion, which doctors interpret to know about nature of lesion. It is used commonly to diagnose problems related to Gall bladder, Common bile duct, Pancreas, Esophageal and Stomach lining, and Rectal lesions also where other imaging tests have not given any conclusive answer.
It is commonly used to diagnose and detect staging of the cancer of esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and rectum. It can also take sample from lesions like unexplained lymph nodes, mass or any other lesions in chest cavity, & abdominal cavity.
EUS also has therapeutic potential in terms of Draining of various deep seated collections in abdominal cavity and cystic lesions near pancreas and draining of bile ducts which are not feasible by other means.
Preparation for EUS is similar to normal OGD (upper endoscopy) and colonoscopy (large bowel endoscopy).
